Choirmaster General
Pastor Emmanuel Oluyemi Akinpelu is a graduate of Music. He majored in Performance for his first degree at the then University of Ife (Unife), Ile-Ife, SouthWest, Nigeria, now Obafemi Awolowo University.
He was a lecturer in the Department of Music, Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, Imo State (1985-86) and former Oyo State College of Education, Ilesa, now Osun State College of Education (1986-96). He later moved to International School, University of Lagos where he served as Head of the Department of Music from 1996, till he retired from active teaching in the year 2020.
EARLY LIFE & FAMILY
He was born on the 11th of December, 1955 to the family of Prince Johnson Ibikunle Akinpelu of the Imose royal family of Imèsi-Ilé Kingdom, and Pastor (Mrs) Comfort Modupe Akinpelu (Nee Ogunbumni). His two parents had great musical talents which rubbed positively on him. His father was a choirmaster with one of the CAC churches, while the mother was an outstanding soprano lead singer during her maiden days at CAC, Onfyanrin-Ibadan.
EARLY MUSICAL BEGINNINGS
Little wonder therefore that Pastor Akinpelu’s foray into music started early in life as a choir boy at CAC Olugbode, Odo-Ona, Ibadan (1967-74). From 1970-1974, he attended Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro (CHSA), Egbado, of Ogun State, SouthWest Nigeria, where he was an active member of the School Choir and the Society for Dramatic Arts.
EARLY CAREER
After his Secondary education, he got an appointment as a school teacher at St John’s School, Molete, Ibadan from July to December 1974 before he got admitted to the Federal School of Forestry, Naraguta, Jos, Benue-Plateau State, from January 1975-July 1976. With a Forestry Certificate, he got employed by Oyo State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources (MANR) Department of Forestry, Utilisation Unit. In 1977, he got a government sponsorship for a specialist training in Forest Utilisation that took him to London and Stockholm, Sweden.
MUSIC MINISTRY IN BIACI
Pastor Yemi Akinpelu started his music ministry at the Blood of Jesus Apostolic Church International (BIACI), Mosadoluwa Assembly, Odo-Ona, Ibadan in 1978 upon invitation to assist the choir, in preparation for an event; and eventually became the choirmaster of the church. He was later moved to BIACI, Oke-Iunu, Mokola, Ibadan in 1979 on the initiative of the late General Apostle J.T. Durojaiye. While there, he founded The BIACI CHORALE that laid the foundation for the present standard of church music tradition in the BIACI churches today. After his stint at the Oke Itunu assembly, he was transferred again to the Headquarter Church, Oke-Àánd, as the Choirmaster, in December 1980.
He was later appointed Choirmaster-General for the Blood of Jesus Apostolic Church International by the Founder and First President, General Apostle, Prophet J.T. Durojaiye. This was upon his graduation in 1985, from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ilé-Ifè, with a Bachelor of Arts (Music). In spite of being the Choirmaster General of BIACI, he bagged another appointment as the Organist and Master of the Music, for Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Omofe, Ilésà, following his appointment as a lecturer in the Department of Music, OSCOED, Ilesa in 1986. As a team player, Pastor Akinpelu served under the leadership of Mr Christopher Oyesiku; working closely with some Ghanaian lecturers in the department including Mr Augustine Bamfo, Vincent Richter, Kwasi Siaw Lattey and James Adunli Yankey who impacted his career as a professional church musician.
UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP & ACHIEVEMENTS
As an undergraduate at the then University of Ife, Pastor Yemi Akinpelu was one of the founding members of the Association of Music Students (AMUS) of the Department of Music, which later transformed to Music Students Association of Nigeria (MUSAN). He became the President of the association in 1983.
He conducted the much celebrated Terra Choral Group and Chamber Orchestra (Unife) from 1981-85 with several Concerts of Choral Classics to the group’s credit, presenting outstanding works of renowned Western and African composers. He was also the Music Director of Ayoro Voices, Ile-Ife. He performed creditably well to the extent of drawing a letter of commendation and attestation from Prof Wole Soyinka, the Nobel Laureate.
FOUNDING OF NIGHTINGALES INTERNATIONAL
Akinpelu was unrelenting. In 1987, he founded the group, known then, as The Nightingale Choral Voices, Ilesa, shortly after his appointment as a Lecturer in the Department of Music, OSCOED, Ilesa.
The group, which had a remarkable impact on the musical atmosphere of Ilesa and environs, with many outstanding Choral Concerts and renditions, has since been re-christened Nightingales International, Ibadan upon relocation from Ilesha to Ibadan in 1992. Nightingales International, Ibadan, is still one of the most outstanding choral groups in Nigeria till today.
INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION & AWARDS
CMG, as he is fondly called, has organized numerous high profile concerts of choral music, and has led the Nightingales to perform in several Anglican Cathedrals and other Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. For instance, in June 2009, he led the Nightingales to an international musical event at the National Arts Theatre in Accra, Ghana, and at The Apostolic Church, Teshie, also in Ghana, where he received an award of excellence.
This iconic music master has many other awards to his credit including:
Ibadan Music Society Award, in recognition of his selfless and outstanding contribution towards the development of music in Nigeria – (2015).
CAC Yaba Choir Award, in recognition of contribution to the development and growth of church music – (May 2019)
The Africa Classical Music Festival Award, in recognition of his immense contribution to world music – (November 2019)
Emmanuel Anglican Church, Ibadan Award He won the Hymn Medley composer of the year – (2021)
TRUSTEE POSITIONS
He is a trustee of three distinguished bodies, namely:
- Guild of Organists of Nigeria (GONig)
- The Blood of Jesus Apostolic Church International Inc.
- Asiwaju of Remo Christians Choir Festival.
EXAMINATION ROLES
Pastor Yemi Akinpelu was appointed the Chief Examiner and Chairman for the body of music examiners for both the National and International examination bodies in Nigeria. (NECO and WAEC). He was in the International Moderating Committee for SSCE Music (WAEC) both Nigeria and Ghana from 2006 – 2016.
He was appointed by the Executive Committee of the Guild of Organists of Nigeria (GONig) as the Chairperson for the Service Playing Certification (SPC) Examinations Board. July 2023.
CHURCH LEADERSHIP
He was ordained BIACI Pastor in May 1990 and was appointed into the Apostolic Council of the church in 1998. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Church.
COMPOSITIONS
He is a Church Music composer and arranger of several renowned Hymn-Medleys and other outstanding compositions, notable among which is, D'odimú.

He is married and blessed with children.
